PGD - Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis
In PGD a small piece of the embryo during an IVF cycle is analysed to detect for any genetic alterations mainly focusing on single gene diseases or mutations such as Cystic Fibrosis, Spinal Muscular Dystrophies (SMA), Fragile X Syndrome, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), Huntington Disease. These diseases have high transmission rates with severe disabilities in the affected children. Hence PGD helps in diagnosing such congenital diseases for couples who have a known risk for genetic disease so as to conceive a healthy pregnancy.
