Genital TB treatment
Tuberculosis classically affects the lungs but can spread to any part of the body. Affecting the genital tract can lead to several complications including infertility. In India, genital tuberculosis is the most common cause of infertility where 40% of women with infertility have some history of pelvic tuberculosis while 10% have active disease. TB of the genital tract can affect the tubes leading to blocked tubes or affect the uterus and ovaries. The symptoms are vague with pain, abnormal discharges, and irregular and heavy menstrual periods, etc while many may remain asymptomatic requiring investigations to diagnose the disease. Treatment if started early can prevent permanent damage to the organs and patients conceive.
